Robert Johnson has always been a legend in the world, and it’s not a big surprise that he is an even bigger legend in my neck of the woods. You see Johnson is believed to be buried a little more than an hour from my place of residence here in the Mississippi Delta. (He is buried in Leflore County, Greenwood, MS (Little Zion M.B. Church.)) There have been so many artists that have looked up to him over the years. If you’ve never listened to his songs, I want to encourage you to do so now with this one. The man was born in 1911 and died in 1938. There are myths of him selling his soul to the devil for his guitar prowess. He only has 42 known songs recorded. For a catalogue and life so short, it’s something great that his legacy has been preserved, even to this day. Listen to Robert Johnson. Read the stories about him. Learn about this man that paved the road for so many to follow.

From Four ‘Till Late

From four ’till late, I was wringin’ my hands and cryin’
From four ’till late, I was wringin’ my hands and cryin’
I believe to my soul, that your daddy’s Gulfport bound

From Memphis to Norfolk, is a thirty-six hours ride
From Memphis to Norfolk, is a thirty-six hours ride
A man is like a prisoner and he’s never satisfied

A woman is like a dressersome man always ramblin’ through its drawers
A woman is like a dressersome man always ramblin’ through its drawers
It cause so many men, wear an apron overall

From four ’till late, she get1 with a no-good bunch and clown
From four ’till late, she get1 with a no-good bunch and clown
Now, she won’t do nothin’, but tear a good man’ reputation down

When I leave this town, I’m gon’ bid you fare, farewell
And when I leave this town, I’m gon’ bid you fare, farewell
And when I return again, you’ll have a great long story to tell

I’ve been following Jon Brion for a few years now. He has done some stellar work scoring some very common movies, and yet, to my surprise, alot of people just simply do not care to even pay mind to the genius scoring of these movies. Scores on his resume include but are not limited to Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, I He has also recorded various solo works which have either been bootlegged, or released on his one highly overlooked solo release “Meaningless,” which I am proud to say that I own. The man is a genius. His live shows are the one-man band thing. He handles it all. He can do it all. He has produced so many records, it’ll take you about an hour just to read through the list (no joke!) His most recent production credit goes to the newest Kanye West record, which is his first venture into the world of Hip-hop. I totally implore you to check out Mr. Brion. The song that I’m posting is from Punch-Drunk Love and it’s called Here We Go. I think it’s one of my personal favorites of his. Enjoy!

Here We Go

You’ve gotta hope
That there’s someone for you
Strange as you are
Who can cope
With the things that you do
Without trying too hard

‘Cause you can bend the truth
Till it’s suiting you
These things that you’re wrapping all
around you
Never know what they will amount to
If you’re life is just going on without you
It’s the end of the things you know
Here we go

You’ve gotta know
That there’s more to this world
Than what you have seen
‘Cause we all
Have a limited view
Of what it can be

As we move along
With our blinders on

Each one of us feels a little stranded
And you can’t explain or understand it
Each one of us is on a different planet
Amidst all the to and fro
Someone can say hello
Here we go

Feeling that someone really gets you
Well it’s something that noone should
object to
It could happen today so I suggest you
Skip your habbit of laying low
It’s the end of the things you know
Here we go

Someone can say hello
You old so and so
Here we go

That’s one of my favorite Jon Brion songs. I could kick myself…there was some deal on his website a few years ago — he was signing copies of his CD with a sharpie for an extra 10 dollars….. I bought the cheaper version.
