A song with ‘Superman’ in the title should never be so touching and emotionally uplifting. The Flaming Lips may be better known for songs with kooky lyrics, but Wayne Coyne’s fragile vocal delivery can be unsettlingly heartfelt, as demonstrated by ‘Waitin’ For A Superman’. The strained voice is perfectly accompanied by pianos, guitars and studio trickery, yet still feels so bare.

The song frequently asks if it’s getting heavy, and concludes that there are some things, such as death, that are ‘just too heavy for Superman to lift’. It is a sombre conclusion to a sombre song.
