Native New Yorker Caitlin Gilbert, aka Cortical, is an up-and-coming DJ/producer in the Boston area.  With an international upbringing, classical training, and early appreciation for the best of the 70s, the worst of the 80s, and all of the 90s, Cortical has developed a disturbingly diverse taste in music: folk, garage, house, rap, jazz, and really trashy pop, to name a few, are all roommates on her Macbook’s near-exploding hard drive.  A graduate of the MMMMAVEN DJ program, she has mixed sets that are creative, unexpected, and have been known to induce spontaneous dance-offs.  Her recent foray into production reflects her eclectic style, as her melodic and bass-heavy remixes have given a new take on artists like The Beach Boys and Shakira.  When she’s not being a mad scientist in her lab at Harvard Med or playing Pokemon Red on her iPhone, Cortical likes to pretend she’s a really cool “musician” and/or the female version of Ryan Hemsworth.

MIX:

Cortical – “Creations Vol. 4”

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO:

Second City – “I Wanna Feel (Zed Bias Remix)”

UK Garage is one of my favorite genres, and Zed’s remix takes the original’s 90s two-step magic to another level; the day ZB makes a dud tune, I will shave my head–and I really really really like my hair.

Jesse Boykins III – “Show Me Who You Are (Prod. by Machinedrum)

The combination of JBIII’s vocals and Machinedrum’s lush-with-a-hint-of-dark production epitomize sexiness; I’m obsessed with the masterful pacing Travis brings to every track he makes.

Chrome Sparks – “Goddess”

There are songs you like, because you recognize and connect with a certain style or pattern about them; and then there are unprecedented songs that simply blow your mind–this is one of those songs.

THAT SOMEBODY, aka Sammi Nguyen, is a Boston native with a diverse background, but her first and foremost passion is music, particularly behind the turntables. Her musical influences draw heavily from 90s R&B and hip hop, the music she grew up listening to.  Outside of music, Sammi is a big foodie and is often found at the opening of a new restaurant or waiting in line at a food truck.

MIX

That Somebody – “Until Then”

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO:

CyHi da Prynce – “Mandela”

I came across CyHi recently and been a fan of his mixtape “Black Hystori Project”.  This joint was what caught my attention in the first place, but the whole mixtape is tough!

BANKS – “Brain”

Because it’s produced by Shlohmo and I’m obsessed with all his work.

 PARTYNEXTDOOR – “Persian Rugs”

Because it’s a panty-dropper – need I say more?

About The Author

“One glimpse is all it takes to tell you that Music Is Art is something special. You can start by judging this blog by its cover—it’s one of the best-designed, most aesthetically aware music blogs around—but there’s much more to it than just a pretty template. For one, Danielle, the “dreamer/designer” behind MIA, focuses not only on excellent music, but on art, photography and writing and how they all intersect and inform the music. By sharing the sounds and sights that inspire her, she’s inspiring a growing number of readers on a daily basis. By documenting artists’ creative processes, she’s, in the process, creating a pretty substantial, always-evolving work of art herself.” - Nerd Litter
