robyn covers prince & alicia keys

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

After seeingRobyn perform live in concert two weeks ago in Miami, it’s been hard not to listen to her music all the time. Such an energetic show filled with a very small crowd, that really were so happy to be there. Recently Robyn created her very own bold take on Prince’s classic song “When Doves Cry” for BBC4′s “On Track with SEAT“, a show where artists record live sessions direct to vinyl at London’s Metropolis Studios.

Listen

Robyn – When Doves Cry (Prince Cover)

A true favorite is Robyn’s cover of Alicia Keys’ “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart” which she performed as apart of NYC’s Summer IHeartRadio‘s video series. Heartfelt lyrics sound so perfect with the tone of her voice, even when she fumbles her words. Robyn makes it different than the original but never loses the song’s emotional integrity. In other words, pop music never sounded so good.

massive attack :: bayfront park :: miami

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

to be able to witness massive attack live october 26, 2010 at the bayfront ampitheater in miami, florida was amazing.  growing up in the early nineties, massive attack were the base of where my triphop music education began along with tricky featuring martina topley bird’s poetic voice soaring through my mind and the beauty of portishead’s hypotic beats and lovely, sullen vocals by beth gibbons. to understand this music during the early nineties and discover yourself made life very powerful, and to see massive attack live last week featuring the feminine vocals of martina topley bird was enough to make everything sound just as it should be — perfect.

driving easily into downtown miami, being surrounded by the lights of the city, and biscayne bay next door created an energy to engage the humid warmth of the chilled out music and versatile crowd. as soon as the lights went off and the sound came on for bristol, england’s massive attack, everyone recognized they were in for quiet sensuality blending into explosions of sexuality in it’s finest. throughout the show in the lights, the band chose to visually capture the audience’s questioning mind by showcasing moving words of factual information about our world, our war and ..even miami’s local news.

for one hour and a half, it was easy to fall under their spell. my favorite part was witnessing massive attack showcase the intensity of their songs *mezzanine* segueing into *angel*. martina topley bird graced us with vocals on a few songs including the beloved teardrop, where the band broke it down a bit with acoustics, making it sound almost new again, yet still beautiful. seamlessly, the audience was transported back in time to enjoy the beauty of what was a wonderful experience.

enjoy massive attack live in miami with *inertia creeps*::

stay tuned for an interview on music is art with martina topley bird!

robyn :: indestructible

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

And I never was smart with love
I let the bad ones in and the good ones go
But I’m gonna love you like I’ve never been hurt before
I’m gonna love you like I’m indestructible

Recently, Robyn shared the new video for her single “Indestructible” from Body Talk Pt. 2 of her 2010 three album series. It’s beautiful to think about the meaning of the song, but for those that have a different focus for what the video means, it may be difficult. Although most have called Robyn’s latest video NSFW, it truly isn’t about sex. The scene plays forward with couples undressing, kissing and then rewinds back to the couples redressing. Like an afterthought setting an overtone for the entire story, that maybe you shouldn’t be with the person you are with. To get deeper, Robyn showcases how intense it can be to feel a new attraction after a breakup, the strength you have to give yourself when even considering being intimate with someone, and the realization of how destructive it is to give over your heart and watch it all fade away.

You’ve Got the Love

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Time after time I think “Oh Lord what’s the use?”
Time after time I think it’s just no good

Sooner or later in life, the things you love you lose
But you got the love I need to see me through

I love how sometimes you’ll play your ipod on shuffle and rediscover a song that sounds so good, that you can’t help but obsessively wear it out and repeat it over and over again for the next two days.

That is how Florence & the Machine‘s cover of Candi Staton’s “You Got the Love” has been for me.  There’s something so touching about the way Florence sings this song, it’s almost heartbreaking. Almost like she’s screaming for everyone no matter what race, sex, orientation you are.. it doesn’t matter, LOVE is important.

beyonce versus lady gaga

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Although most believe pop music is indeed sh*t, when it comes down to Beyonce and Lady Gaga, there’s an entertainment line to cross.  The two teamed up to create two songs together. In their latest videos, Beyonce and Lady Gaga both showcase their true performer persona’s, highlighting their showmanship with sensual dance moves, hypnotizing beats, and colorful images that are out of this world.

bat for lashes covers radiohead

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

On February 19, 2010, Bat for Lashes performed at the De La Warr Pavilion in England’s Bexhill-on-Sea and showcased a cover of Radiohead’s “All I Need”.  This rendition is lightly dusted with magic, simplified with Natasha Khan’s voice and a string section that transcends into a gentle crescendo of over-analyzing memories and painful lyrics.
