As I prepare for going back to school and choosing a new focusing major of Graphic Design, studying various forms of fonts used to create typography artwork has become increasingly intriguing.
For the 51st Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy hired TBWA\Chiat\Day to produce a series of typographic illustrations of different musicians to promote the February 8, 2009 event. The artists that were selected for the Grammy typography were Stevie Wonder, Rihanna, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Coldplay, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Lenny Kravitz. Each of them were asked to provide a list of at least 15 songs that inspired their own creativity. In return, each song title provided was colorfully incorporated into the graphic design, swirling around portraits of the individual musicians’ profiles.
Please enjoy a few favorites from the typography collection below, along with a choice track of each musicians’ originals and one song of inspiration from the personal list that was chosen.
In 2005 I was depressed. Suicidal. I went to a therapist. I began writing a beautiful revolution. In 2006 an agent approached me – then a publisher (John Murray) and my doodles became the book If You’re Happy And You Know it. It was published during the week of my 40th birthday. I began doodling for BBC Ouch. 2007. I had finally found my place in this world. In 2008 I met my American publishers (Harper Perennial) in Soho. We sat for 2 hours in my favourite place in London Patisserie Valerie and planned how Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now would be. A memoir. A memoir.
My love life was still a complete disaster – going from one bad relationship to another. But then I met her. The girl on the internet. She lived in America. I went to see her. If I could write it down, it wouldn’t come close to how she was. She came to England. In 2008 we sat in my bedroom and laid out every doodle, every word I had ever written on the floor and formed the narrative of my book Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now. June 2008 I went back to America with her. We got married. January 2009 my book Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now was published. In America. The place I now call home. I got a new agent. An American agent. Began to doodling for A Way To Garden. 3 months ago my wife and I bought our first home together. We adopted a dog. An unloved pit bull. We named her pickle. Last week my green card came through. In 2007 I found my place in this world. In 2009 I found everything.
I used to think you needed to see it, to believe it. But now I realize that to see it, you must first believe it. Everything is possible. Everything is possible.
Listening to the single Starlings from Elbow’s 2008 album, the Seldom Seen Kid. An album so beautiful that may take a bit of time to get used to, but translates into a magical experience that’s completely worth it in the long run. Be sure to hear the quality of Elbow’s recent performance from July 24th 2009, inside the Santa Monica, California KCRW Studios.
From Radiohead’s album Hail to the Thief, the song There, There was the first single from the release and was nominated for a Grammy award. Co-produced by Nigel Godrich, when There, There was completed the emotions of the song made lead singer Thom Yorke cry.
There, There was given the alternate subtitle “The Boney King of Nowhere“, as a reference to Yorke and his son’s favorite British children’s television show Bagpuss. Directed by Chris Hopewell, the luminous music video was created for There, There as a tribute to the memories of the show and shares different human-like eccentricities performed by animals.
Personally, the meaning of Radiohead’s There, There maintains the idea of how songs relay different messages that pertain to one’s life. It can make one realize how one person feels, may be completely opposite to someone else’s emotions. As a song meaning, There, There represents the battle of letting something go that’s not real, or to keep holding on because it is.
my family here means nothing and thinks what i’ve been going through isn’t worth anything. a conversation escalated with my uncle/godfather and aunt yelling at me, how my acknowledging that i’m depressed isn’t something to even mention. i told them that they didn’t have to talk to me like this and that i wanted to leave. my mother was also there and very upset by my aunt’s words towards us both getting help through therapy and medication. we then went to my car and my uncle/godfather followed us out, and started screaming at me to shut-up! he stated, “no wonder why yr father doesn’t want you and by the way, the thing about you being raped, other girls have been raped haven’t they?” i started crying, telling him to stop and he said “you need to be really hit hard!” he went to the side of my door as my window was open and i was afraid he was going to hit me. as i closed my window quickly, he yelled… “yr a coward, aren’t you?”

Will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas presents Worlds on Fire, a music and art collaboration featuring portraits of 2009 Grammy nominees as drawn by pop surrealism artists. The exhibition’s celebration will take place at the Pacific Electric Lofts in downtown Los Angeles.
Worlds on Fire was conceived by will.i.am in conjunction with his popular social and political networking site Dipdive, curated by Shooting Gallery and artist Kris Lewis, and produced by Gen Art. Focused on innovation and creativity, Worlds on Fire is the only event during Grammy Week bridging the gap between the once separate mediums of performing/recording arts and modern art.
List of Artists (and Musicians portraits created):
Only the most renowned artists have been commissioned to immortalize an elite selection of this year’s Grammy nominees with a personal portrait at the exhibition, which will serve as a lasting impression of the musician to commemorate their outstanding contributions to the world of music.
All of the original artwork will be on sale via silent auction with limited edition prints of each portrait also available for purchase. Proceeds from Worlds on Fire will benefit local charities including will.i.am’s Peapod Foundation and Watts Willowbrook Boys and Girls Club to support LA youths in need.

last monday evening inside los angeles’ hollywood bowl, radiohead’s thom yorke and jonny greenwood acoustically performed live tell me why, a cover from neil young’s classic 1970 album “after the gold rush”. previously over the years, radiohead has enjoyed covering other neil young work such as on the beach (acoustically in 2003 on british radio), cinammon girl (live in paris, france in 2001) and after the gold rush (from thom’s 2002 bridge school benefit show on neil’s very own piano.)
it all started with a stumble and i get old and i get humble
the sky cracked a million ways, making me blind
and as the trees grew higher and higher and the fish began to fly
i went and stole some wings, and thought “why can’t i?”
after seeing radiohead live and sitting in a post-haze of non-moving traffic for over 2 hours, what do you really listen to? when brooklyn’s yeasayer’s debut album all hours cymbals began to play, it worked perfectly from start to finish, beginning with the tribal harmonies, pounding drums and underlining simplicity of sunrise.
