with a vision of a gentle coast…

running away from yourself

your body, your mind

all your life

with each place

it’s easy to keep wondering

what brings us there

and what we are expecting to find

so we create our own distractions,

to figure out who we are and where we are going

until it’s realized the past is over

and all that matters right now is the present.

you go wherever you go

you go today

you go wherever you go

you go today

you go wherever you go

rest in peace, amy winehouse

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

Yesterday, the world lost the golden voice of Amy Winehouse.

It’s been a sad weekend thinking of her life of the tough addictions she tried to survive with, and listening back on her soulful music that became known so quickly. Her catchy and melodic hooks inside tones of such funky blues, made audiences become instantly addicted to her sounds. As a whole we watched her publically struggle as her fame rose, and it seemed almost all too powerful for even a singing powerhouse to control. Personally when others would discuss Amy Winehouse, it was easy to withdraw from others negativity as it was important to realize there was a tragic sense of pain that this woman was desperately trying to overcome.

Amy Winehouse loved to sing; her strong harmonies were one of the greatest catharthisis that seemed to get her through, and others who instantly related to her gravitating sounds. As a teenager, Amy went to the same UK performing art school as songstresses Adele, Duffy, and Leona Lewis. All girls definitely strove for the same type of passion in their vocals, and earned their own notability for what they contributed to our music industry. However different in their own way, Amy had an old-soul intensity from the rest that showcased a complete vulnerability displayed as pure, genuine, and original.

When a musical great passes away, their music seems to enhance to a sacred degree. Strangely aged the same as her predecessors Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin before, each died in their own devastating way at the age of 27, and are known as apart of the Forever 27 Club. As Billy Joel use to sing “Only the good die young…”, maybe it’s true as their music was too rare for those that couldn’t understand it. Luckily for those that did with Amy Winehouse, we are left with her debut album Frank, and sophmore album Back to Black which will always hold a special place in our musical hearts.

shoutout to Motel de Moka

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Listen: Bonobo – We Could Forever Black Sands (Ninja Tune, 2010)

I love the music blog, Motel de Moka.

When I initially started Music Is Art back in 2006, I stayed at the motel from time to time. The staff were very welcoming there, allowing me to visit, collaborate, and share my own work. Now when someone asks me “what is your favorite place to find music?,” it definitely has always been Motel de Moka. The whole staff of writers including the lovely Moka herself showcase gorgeous playlists of music you’ve never heard but wish you had.. before. It’s an inspiration aurally and visually whenever I travel over there! Thanks to Motel de Moka for always showcasing what an eclectic mix of good music and art can happily do to the mind.

massive attack :: bayfront park :: miami

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

to be able to witness massive attack live october 26, 2010 at the bayfront ampitheater in miami, florida was amazing.  growing up in the early nineties, massive attack were the base of where my triphop music education began along with tricky featuring martina topley bird’s poetic voice soaring through my mind and the beauty of portishead’s hypotic beats and lovely, sullen vocals by beth gibbons. to understand this music during the early nineties and discover yourself made life very powerful, and to see massive attack live last week featuring the feminine vocals of martina topley bird was enough to make everything sound just as it should be — perfect.

driving easily into downtown miami, being surrounded by the lights of the city, and biscayne bay next door created an energy to engage the humid warmth of the chilled out music and versatile crowd. as soon as the lights went off and the sound came on for bristol, england’s massive attack, everyone recognized they were in for quiet sensuality blending into explosions of sexuality in it’s finest. throughout the show in the lights, the band chose to visually capture the audience’s questioning mind by showcasing moving words of factual information about our world, our war and ..even miami’s local news.

for one hour and a half, it was easy to fall under their spell. my favorite part was witnessing massive attack showcase the intensity of their songs *mezzanine* segueing into *angel*. martina topley bird graced us with vocals on a few songs including the beloved teardrop, where the band broke it down a bit with acoustics, making it sound almost new again, yet still beautiful. seamlessly, the audience was transported back in time to enjoy the beauty of what was a wonderful experience.

enjoy massive attack live in miami with *inertia creeps*::

stay tuned for an interview on music is art with martina topley bird!

southern lights and sounds.

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

it feels good to get lost in the different towns of florida, as each one has a new feeling.  my favorite place to go has been delray beach. it’s very laid back with pastel key west style homes and known for it’s atlantic avenue with beautiful shops and delicious restaurants. i keep coming back to two places in particular: dada‘s (pictured above) for their ambiance of a cozy house turned into a restaurant/bar and sitting outside in their large frontyard decorated with christmas lights and lanterns under beautiful big trees, feeling the tropical breeze while having a fresh blackberry mojito, enjoying grilled brie made with honey garlic butter and listening to great music like billie holliday; then there’s vic & angelos (pictured below), a new york city italian style restaurant known for their retro meets modern decor, beautiful gorgonzola wedge and mozzarella red-vine tomato salads, incredible parmesan french fries, and the best double organic prime grass-fed burgers you’ve ever had.

in music news, deerhunter is coming out with their fourth studio album *halcyon digest* on september 28, 2010. being a fan of all that the multi-talented bradford cox creates, this new work is sure to please the masses. their single “helicopters” showcases how dreamy and delicate sounding the efforts of this athens, georgia indie rock band have chosen to go in. please enjoy!

i like the way it hurts…

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

after just getting out of summer college classes, i haven’t spent as much time as i’d like to research good music and discover new things of what i like.  lately all i’ve been able to do is listen to is old mixtapes or pop songs on the radio. when the duet of eminem and rihanna performing “love the way you lie” came out, i couldn’t help but give it a few listens. of course, by the first i knew there was an intense hook to it but didn’t realize just how emotionally important it felt until the second listen.

videos seem to always showcase the complexity behind a song. actors megan fox and dominic monaghan sure provide a powerful display of how difficult it is to be in an abusive relationship. in my own opinion, the fire that grows throughout the video acknowledges how passion mixed with rage and anger only leaves a beautiful disaster in the end. some publications have displayed dislike for this song, for the video, and for the awareness of domestic violence. yet, it’s important for more to be seen of just how serious this matter is, and how it’s not okay for it be ignored anymore.
