the thing that i’m into is the philosophy of the music.
i love the surprise of things
the accidents…
just the sound of a word, to try to express them in the best way, so that the emotion is totally revealed.

back in 2003, beth gibbons of portishead and long time friend rustin’ man [paul webb of talk talk] collaborated together on the haunting autumn album *out of season*. the achingly beautiful arrangements of instruments surrounding strong lyrics and intoxicating vocals created a feeling that bled longing and loss as a secret sense of love and hope from start to finish.

after the album’s release, bib and i went to experience beth gibbons & rustin man live at st. ann’s warehouse in brooklyn. with members of portishead and talk talk as the band standing inside a backlit blue shadow, everyone faded into their own perfect private view. inbetween breaths and hauls of a cigarette, beth clutched her microphone with both hands, gently whispering elegant melodies. cast under a spell, the audience swayed in humbled quiet awe. surprised by the epic intensity of crashing drums, loud acoustic guitars, swooping strings and dark keyboards, transcending through beth’s powerful and simultaneously fragile evocative voice — every song delivered touching each and everyone’s hearts.

to go from listening to the album out of season and then seeing this live was something quite out of the land where dreams are made of. recently stumbling upon the berlin recording of this tour, it truly reminded me of just how lucky we were to be there.

i didn’t have a hard time making it i had a hard time letting it go.

over the past twenty-four years, i have dedicated my heart and soul to the world of music. artists may always come and go, but there’s those particular few that you somehow can’t and won’t ever forget.

elliott smith is one of them.

quietly inside of all the open sorrows and sighs of regret, guilt, addiction, misunderstandings — there’s these certain spaces inbetween when elliott sings that are meant to be hidden but appear so vivid and vulnerable. its amazing how a part of us that can remain so tightly disclosed and private, every now and then unlocks itself and gives a new sense of light and hope that just keeps on radiating. thats how i feel when i listen to his music. somehow underneath every simplicity permeates a warmth that leaves one so tired that we’re blessed with an optimistic sense of the bittersweet.

i, with a deeper instinct, choose a man
who compels my strength,
who makes enormous demands on me,
who does not doubt my courage or my toughness,
who does not believe me naive or innocent,
who has the courage to treat me like a woman

in order to search for music, i always have to wear a pair of headphones. im not quite sure what it is about the exact feeling towards variables of soundwaves traveling through tiny speakers to my ears, through my head and if its lucky, to my heart but when it works, its almost like partaking on a brand new beginning, a realization that music will always need to have this important aspect and still wont ever lose its spark.

hailing from australia, clogs are a quartet compromised from a neo classical background that share parts of acoustic-electronica and turn it into something divine. beginning from smooth levels of guitar, viola, bassoon, and percussion, they take smaller toys of instruments and integrate them into their sound as if the missing pieces found are apart of a patterned puzzle that has been waiting there all along. these certain different dimensions collide as curious repetition and experimentation takes the listener on their own private journey, full with calming daydreams of rich soundscapes detailing golden fields, turquoise blue oceans and magical, oriental foreign lands, the clogs are sure to make you feel safe anywhere even when yr far from home.
