happy birthday, mr. buckley

Friday, November 17th, 2006

“and what do i want people to get from the music?
whatever they want. whatever you like.
somebody asked me what i wanted to do.
i just said i wanted to…
just to give back to it what it’s given me
and to meet all the other people that are doing it
…just to be in the world, really.”

something else been moving me

Friday, November 17th, 2006

diane cluck is one of those magicians=musicians that goes straight to my soul. every time she creates something, im instantly drawn to it. the quietness reminds me of being left alone and silent in an empty church, the way she so elegantly stands there and sings with her guitar. its as if yr naturally always wondering why yr where you are but this time it feels like home. devendra, antony, nomi, cocorosie and my brightest diamond understand how i feel. as they too believe so much class comes from this woman’s music. at a time when our world seems anything but im always searching for those that may have some type of different hope.

diane cluck recently handwrapped her new album monarcana in brown paper and sent it to me. as with anything she has ever made, im beyond inspired and truly thankful for what she shares.

radiohead lullabies.

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

if i’m ever to get married [maybe when im 35] and that moment comes that i have a child, my greatest hope is that they will carry a piece of my love of music and internally make it apart of them forever.

and what better way to begin an introduction to your favorite sounds than with rockabye baby records? they transform bands like radiohead, tool, pink floyd, bjork, pixies and led zeppelin into sweet instrumental lullabies. stripped down to bare levels of glockenspiel and vibraphone; this is baby-approved children’s music that adults may actually enjoy.

win! the peel sessions (1991-2004)

Monday, November 13th, 2006

respected by amazing musicians and an inspiration to many, it was a great cause of sadness when john peel passed away two years ago. as with the many legendary peel sessions, john was a british master of finding undiscovered talent and casually letting each performer share an originality that truly profiled how emotionally intense they were live.

in the studios of the bbc on-air journalist, pj harvey was recorded on many occasions. they created a special bond from the very early beginning of pj’s career and along the way, john proved to be one of her greatest mentors. as a tribute in memory of him, a personally selected collection of twelve rare live performances were mastered and recently released.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

win! thanks to the good people at filter magazine, musicisart will be giving away extra copies of pj harvey – the peel sessions (1991-2004). to win a copy, please leave a thoughtful comment (with yr email or myspace address) or send an email as the winner will be randomly selected by november 19.

a visual mind-trick of what i see.

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

one of the greatest ways to discover new music is by the cover art. searching around online, the above image appeared, leading me to learn the discography and life of sole. collaborating with fellow anticon label-mates alias and jel, and creating albums side by side with sage francis, he profiles himself as a powerfully political vegan and unadulterated lyricist. rambling over so-called uncovential levels of hip hop beats, sole truthfully depicts and analzyes the way he sees an ever-changing world.

self inflicted wounds [from the album -- live from rome 2005]

shoot me in the back, stab me in my sleep…in small circles of ladies and gentlemen,
you have perpetuated nonsense.
whatever you do, don’t let your true colors spoil the painting.

tree colored see.

Friday, November 10th, 2006

from santa cruz, california… the mystic chords of memory are the timeless creation between recent newlyweds chris gunst (beachwood sparks) and jen hohen (the aisler’s set). this past year they collaborated with l.a.’s nobody presenting his modern take of hip hop and electronica, colorfully fusing it with their own 60′s psychedelic harmonies on the debut album tree colored see.
