In San Francisco? (Rogue Wave)

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

If you like a mix of wurlitzer in psychedelic indie rock, you probably know Rogue Wave and their drummer Pat. Well time to spread the words, donate, or attend their San Francisco concert, they are doing a benefit because Pat needs a second liver transplant. (boo to insurance company)

Their last album “Descended Like Vultures” is a mix up of tempo power pop with light texture here and there. Think happy California sun. They are afterall from SF… etc. go click some stuff already.

i was lying in my bed last night…

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

sometimes i get so startled when i listen to antony & the johnsons. this feeling crashes inside me and it feels so powerful, i want to hide under the covers of my bed and dream and cry about how good it is to feel. becos if i didnt feel this… i dont think i would even begin to understand what all this even means.

its true i always wanted love to be hurtful
and its true i always wanted love to be filled with pain

i am very happy so please hit me
i am very very happy so please hurt me
i am very happy so please hit me
i am very very happy so come on hurt me

theres a consistency in antony’s vocals that fall from the deeply impacting human necessity to love, to fear, to face change and to feel different from the rest of the world. as his music and lyrics build upon one another, an exceptional dramatic range addresses the darkest of hidden places as sensitivity through elegance and grace infuses a secret romantic frequency from deep inside the heart. whether its suppose to be much more than what it seems, its hauntingly emotive and only intensifies to unveil the beauty of who antony is.

a musicisart reader recently recommended
trespassers william.
certain qualities of anna lynne williams’ vocals remind me of aimee mann and to others theres been comparisons to mazzy star. regardless, it has been relaxing me to a slow-core, dream-like state that seems just perfect for a beautiful and calming sunday morning.

shara worden is a graduate of north texas university with a BA in vocal performance and for the last seven years has been a prominent vocal teacher in nyc. however, now seems to be her time to shine touring this fall with sufjan stevens and excelling beyond in writing songs, performing her own project, my brightest diamond.

on the new album, *bring me the workhorse*, beautiful elements of rock, jazz and different levels of operatics come full force unexpectedly mixed inside feelings of longing, lust & loss.

its like being inside a dimly-lit theatre where you happen to be the only one in attendence and in the distant background, yr overhearing a woman singing and all you can do is listen. there’s something strange about the way her voice makes everything in yr mind keep spinning. its funny how music can take a hold, shaking you violently and then for one peaceful moment, yr able to fully understand why you even enjoy it in the first place…

“When I was a kid, I was a listener. Music was something coming out of a radio or off a record, something that made me feel these things I couldn’t explain. It was magical to me, and I thought it was something you had to be ordained with. I was writing poetry, and working on some bits of songs here and there, and I just knew I wanted to try to make somebody feel the way I was feeling when I listened.”

through brightly colored visuals of jamaican sunsets that dance to the sounds of reggae and bongo drums mixing with southern acoustic guitar, the touch of piano keys and east coast r&b, citizen cope comes in and out of conscious blending, immersing and escaping inside of music. his latest album, “every waking moment” was just released this week, sharing an introspection of himself in the barest way possible and an honesty that emits such an amazing energy of his own life story that you can’t help but listen.

brother lee

my first introduction to cope was from the song let the drummer kick. a few years ago, my friend had shared a story of losing someone special to heroin that secretly all went behind it. i can still remember his facial expressions, all the words describing the last day he saw him, the ways of listening to the song and the feeling that it meant absolutely everything. like a repeat of a familiar pattern, i havent seen my own friend in a long time. he struggles day to day with his own addiction and now its strange, whenever i think of citizen cope, i think of him.

especially on even terms or with success

2. to contend with difficulties
and act to overcome them

tonight i’m off to citizen’s show at the hammerstein ballroom in newyorkcity. in more ways than one, it feels like theres a strong reason to be there. if yr not familiar with his music, please listen to this performance from last year to get aquainted.. its been making me smile in humble anticipation all day.

and he told me that i have to save myself

Moonrats are originally from Seattle but are now living in Los Angeles. they are aska, nathan, and jason. i recently discovered them while at work. (i work at a cafe/venue/lounge) we get a lot of local bands. you know . . . OC bands coming in with an army of kids who all have the same skunk hair and tight pants. i mean they’re not all bad but sometimes they’re just not my cup of tea.

last saturday i worked door. when i heard Moonrats set i thought ‘dang who’s this?’ so i got up off my little chair to peek through the door. it was the three people who i had observed earlier coming in and out to smoke on the bench while the other bands played as i doodled on my clipboard. i wish i could’ve gone in to watch their set (next time) but i had to finish working door for the last band. so i guess in the end being outside for a few hours wasn’t too bad. i found a decent band who could play good music. their set was pretty short because the other bands were taking too long and the show had started late but it was good nonetheless. it’s probably because they’re from Seattle and now LA and have that Seattle/LA combined coolness to them.

check them out.
