why do we keep shrieking
when we mean soft things
we should be whispering all the time

remember days we were so young & old

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

from richmond virginia is gregor samsa who named themselves after the lead character in franz kafka’s novel “metamorphasis.”
their 2006 release 55:12 somehow found its way to my headphones into shuffle and i was hypnotized. everything goes so fast, slows down then stops and you breathe until the sad happy vocals and im-just-closing-my-eyes sleepy music takes over. [fans of low and explosions in the sky will truly understand.]

to find me gone is the second album by andy cabic’s band vetiver that will be unveiled on may 22nd.
over the years, andy has helped friend devendra banhart on tour and has slowly crafted the music of vetiver. most remember his style as dreamy quiet acoustics from his debut, but something special has been added — the beauty of loud crashing drums and over and over and over again repeating electric guitars wildly exploding inside yr head. andy shares an intimate connection with his full band [made up of his best friends] thats simply shared right through the sound and really thats what pure magical music is all about.

listen to: red lantern girls

my first introduction to vetiver was a lil complilation cd devendra created called *the golden apples of the sun.* from the likes of antony, espers, diane cluck.. its rather beautiful and one of the most calming and sincere collections to dream to.

give me all of your love

so last night i went to see sia. and it was perfect. standing in the center of the balcony behind the soundboard, clearly staring down between the white christmas lights over the bowery ballroom in nyc. laughing and being with jj, our reactions from running into citizen*cope and hearing sia mention that she wrote the song *numb* for her friend who was addicted to heroin. watching the ways her BEAUTIFUL seductive voice took over that room and hushed the crowd. “the peacefulness.” the surprise of 3 classic ZERO 7 tracks [destiny, distractions, somersault.] sia’s adorable sense of humor talking to the audience feeling comfortable making everyone happy like we were there to support an old good friend.

i was really proud of her.

the best part of all was the end. for the last song, they gave out 3d glasses that turned all the lights in the room into silhouettes of rainbow hearts. i swear, ill never get rid of them. on our drive home with loud music and the lights of new york, i wore those glasses to see the skyline as a city of love and i couldnt stop smiling.

if only.

“Our quoting for our album is: 40% Chanson, 20% R’n’R, 10% Punkrock, 3% DAF-Sequencer, 4% Jacques Dutronc-Rhythmique, 7% Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg, 1,5% Cosmonaute, 10% really old synthesizers, 10% 8-bit Amiga-sampling, 10% transistor amplifier, 1% really expensive and advanced instruments.”

STEREO TOTAL is a berlin duo comprised of the glamorous singer françoise cactus and her musical partner brezel göring. sung in the languages of french, german and english over cool synth sounds mixing eclectic, clever, melodic electronia with pop casio-keyboard punk.

at special parties dancing in seattle,
a dj friend always played great things
one spring day all we did was listen to different vinyls
stereo total being one of them
i can remember their lil extra sounds really hooked me
and i loved it.

in the same year that favorites radiohead and portishead are about to project wonderful releases of their own; its official, the new tool album 10,000 days arrives on may 2nd in exactly 16 days. [dont get too confused.]

all good patient tool fans around the world have been waiting 5 years for the new tool.

the first single, vicarious, was originally set to hit radio this monday.. except a lil easter celebration was made in vein and the music arrived early this weekend. [thanks charlie!]

still inside the same quality of epic alternating time signatures, odd chord/note progressions, explosive pulsating drumming, understated BEAUTIFUL chaotic bass lines

….

true listeners know, tool takes time.

the band’s personal time to make the art and our own time to lay back, vision, anticipate and surrender.

im ready to let go again.

are you?

the universe is hostile, so impersonal
devour to survive — so it is, so its always been
we all feed on tragedy, its like blood to a vampire
vicariously, i live while the whole world dies
much better you than i

..here we go again..
from northern vancouver, hails five lovely ladies called the organ. the lead singer, katie sketch, has been complimented to the likes of morrissey while the music has been associated with the drowning sounds of the cure, interpol and joy division. however, the organ create a new wave feeling all of their own sharing haunting yearning vocals over an old hammond organ, clean catchy guitar riffs, perfected bass lines and crisp propelling drumming.

one day while scanning through music videos, the organ’s brother resonated and i couldnt help but press rewind and play over and over again. then came the headphone listening test of their debut album grab that gun which gave the impression as if they had been performing for years. at times, to hear katie’s howling longing screaming in my ear was worth the addictive listen just in itself. for their next release, it will be interesting to see how far they have grown, as they have proved true potential for simply good things to come and more.

TOO TOUGH TO DIE

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

“whats the point of being alive if yr not sensual?
its relaxed, its natural.”

one of my very favorite shows was back in 1999, tricky at the avalon in boston. feeling his words shaking and trembling, his body twitching surrounded by strong background vocals and an amazing full band leaving everyone in that intimate venue speechless.
~*~
am i gone?
i want to be reborn
you want to live
but you dont know how
tricky’s debut maxinquaye was a masterpiece that included the poetic stylings of martina topley bird.
in 2003, she created her own solo album quixotic captivating listeners once again with her sweet sensual innocence taking a hold leaving you breathless, wanting more.

there were two versions released.. the us album was renamed anything and the tracks were stripped and reordered due to the labels’ belief that americans wouldn’t understand it. however, when listening to the uk official album quixotic, the real songs appear the way it was meant to be heard found inside an elegant journey of trip hop mixed within true passionate soul.

listen to martina: llya, sandpaper kisses
listen to tricky: overcome, black steel
